1.4 Celebration
school wide Earth Day celebration!
Every April, culminating with Earth day, the kindergarten, pre-k, 4's, and 3's students, SMDS staff and SMDS families celebrate our Earth with a variety of activities in order to promote a greater understanding of the environment and what makes it special. The activities are hands on and show the students how they can effect change on different levels. The students plant hundreds of seeds in pots, use recycled bottles to build plant terrariums, and learn about greenhouse planting. Now that our composters are working at full production, we will be able to incorporate compost and water from our rain barrels to plant native species that, in some cases, act as food for native wildlife. We believe this kind of holistic learning produces deeper understanding and lifelong behavioral changes, molding our young students into leaders.

Working with our partnership through Young Audiences, we had a Hip Hop artist work with our Kindergarten, Pre-K, and STEM classes to create poetry about composting. The children learned about keeping beats, and were able to teach Bomani about composting. At the end of the week, the parents were invited to attend our celebration and hear the students perform their composting poems!
leed silver certification
The new SMDS /St Margaret's Church formation building was completed in August of 2015. The building received its LEEDS Silver certification in January of 2016. The certification demonstrates the long-term commitment of the Church vestry members and the school board and staff to energy reduction, low-impact growth and the formative education of our children while embodying the same principles.
